The last three days of training we go out to a stream and put all the training into use, kinda bring it all together.

Arriving at Spring Creek!

More of the gang.

Setting up a backsight on a benchmark!

Instrument setup and modeling for a photographer!

Checking out that level bubble!

They are so cute they get another photo!

Are they reading the scouting report?

An aux crew does there thing.

Another aux crew collecting data!

Champ Camp was once again a success. There were about 75 or so who participated in the training.
In module one of Total Station training the students learn to setup an instrument, a backsight. How to center and level the instrument. How to occupy a point. What complimentary gear is required and they learn to move the instrument form one place to another, or as I like to say, "extend the coordinate system."

A group of folks learning to appreciate the art of setting up an Instrument!

Nancy, she is always fun!

A result of volleyball. Ross, can't keep a good man down; he was not going to miss an opportunity to hone his TS skills!

I was relegated to "the guy that carries the chair for Ross".

Pete looks really serious!

Meagan gives surveying a thumbs up, and Martin agrees!

I forgot his name, an OSU grad student, who's wife Jen kicked my butt at ping pong. It was still fun!

Corey and Devin! Note the booster log under her feet. You have to give her props for not using the TS case!

Super Pete in Action! The new guy....

Wow More CHaMP camp photos. The third day of real training of Intro to Topo Total Station and a presentation on Lidar data integration. The Lidar data integration presentation was shall we say, less then perfect, but I think folks got the idea that its not a simple process and there are plenty of data sets that need work.

It was Ecological Research day yesterday.

Day 2, Champ Camp:
The second day of camp is the beginning of modules wherein the training begins.
In my first module the presentation was a little rough with some unnecessary slides and I seemed to talk about things before I actually got to the slide that best represented what I spoke about.
Anyhow the day consisted of two modules of Intro to Total Station Surveying.
Everyone is wearing rain gear which is an indication of the FUN we had today!

Martin, an assistant trainer, and couple students.

Molly and a crewmate.

More students, apparently they are happy to be here, and I can't imagine why.

Traveling to Champ Camp along I84 the weather turns for the worse:
Champ Camp is held June, in Oregon, every year to teach technicians the proper means of collecting habitat and topographic data to support management decisions related to Salmonid species of fish in the Columbia River Basin.

My role is to teach the collection of topographic data and to support the collection process throughout the season. I also monitor collection results for QA/QC and develop means of monitoring said results.

Camp Day One:
Day one is an introduction to the program. What we do and why we do it!

Notice the Title of this Presentation by Professor Joe Wheaton:
How do you account for fish habitat with a total station?

Day One afternoon we travel to local streams to begin familiarizing folks with the environment they will be working in and the data they will be collecting.

Why are we all Here?......... For the FISH.
